Brief Introduction of Kenting

1. Gueishan:「Mount tortoise 」for hiking. Gueishan is a small hill and is 72m above sea level. It was named Gueishan (Means Tortoise Mountain) because of its tortoise-back shape. On the peak is vast filed of view and therefore make it the ideal site for appreciating the estuaries of Si-Chong stream and Bao-li stream views.


2. National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA): The NMMBA is located on the north west coastal area at the foot of Gueishan (Tortoise Mountain) of KTNP. It was opened in year 2000. The museum has two theme exhibitions: Waters of Taiwan, which displays the environment and ecology of Taiwan island fresh waters, and Coral Kingdom, which simulates the splendid and colorful tropical coral reefs. Meanwhile, the establishment of NMMBA is not only to achieve the national goals in education, culture, economics and recreation, but also to pay our respect to Nature, to pay our concern for the aquatic environment, and to prepare for the future world with love and care.


3. Howan which is a traditional old fishing village: Howan is a small serene fishing village with great sea view and a vast expand of costal estuary. It is the perfect spot for the oceanography studying and recreation. Quiet and peaceful environment the designated area for the constructing of NMMBA, a museum that will provide you a good stay for watching the marine biology.


4. Shiashueiku:「Down water pound」 Along the coastal area from Shiashueiku to Wanlitung is sky-blue ocean with glamorous deep-ocean floor. This area has been claimed an ecological conservation area. The variations of the ocean floor contribute to its unique and distinct features such as giant reef and ocean trenches that cause cliffs, crags, gulches and tunnels come into being.


5. Wanlitung:Long line of「Paulowria tree」 The ocean floor of Wanlitung coastal area is a view of wonder, and it has been claimed an ecological conservation area. It’s an ocean floor that varies constructed of living coral reef, and therefore a perfect location for various stony or soft corals, sea fan colonies, gorgonians (or sea willow) and coral reef fishes that swim as communities to reside(lives). Moreover, lots of shellfish are also spread in this area.


6. Shiunguanzuei:「Crab claw fishing village」 The waters between Wanlitung and Shiunguanzuei have been determined as the future constructing site for an offshore park. The continental shelf of this area is a rather flat slope where various kinds of stony coral grow. And magnificent coral fish lives at Hengchun Peninsula.


7. Guanshan:High mountain literally speaking in Taiwan Guanshan is located at the southwest side of Hengchuen peninsula. Because of its high elevation, you can take in the Hong-Chai-Keng coastline with a single sight. The ocean glistens in the lingering setting sun. The wonderful views of coral reefs and farming field here enhance the beauty of it. The evening glow of Guanshan is one of the eight must-see scenic spots of southern Taiwan.


8. Baisha Bay:「White sandy shore」 Baisha Bay is a small fishing village with a quiet and peaceful atmosphere location at the northwest coastline of Maubitou. Baisha Bay is also a coast made of coral reef; however, the nature exceptionally gifted it with a white sandy beach that extend for about 500 meters long. When the sun beams at the white sandy beach, it glitters and attracts visitors.


9. Maubitou:「Cat nose beak」 Located at the southwest side of Hengchuen peninsula, Maubito confronts Eluanbi and both of them stretch out to Ba-Shi Straits. Between the two spots is the beautiful fiord coastline of Nanwan.


10. Leitashr:「A lighting stroke rock」 The sea area from Maubitou, passing Leitashr to Houbihu has been claimed by KTNP a special sea view area. The ocean is clear and azure and the ocean floor is of magnificent view. Various kinds of stony and soft corals cover the sea floor. The varieties of the marine animal is numerous, to name a few: colorful tropical fishes, conger pikes, shellfishes and seaweeds. The numerous varieties are awesome in Taiwan and even in the world.


11. Houbihu:「Marina and Fishing harbor」 Houbihu is a recreational port located at the north side of Houbihu fishing harbor. It is around 9 ha wide and with a water depth of 2.5m. The capacity of the port is quite large can offering tourists the chance to enjoy various activities at sea. It is run by private business now.


12. Sisal Industry History site: In view of conserving human ecology and displaying the regional characteristics, the KTNP, at the year 1984, invited experts of history to reorganize and consolidate the facilities and equipment, such as building remains from the time of Japanese ruling, the yard where people used to dry sisal, and British produced automatic machine, in the Sisal Industry HM. They would also study and gather information about the history and background of sisal industry. The Sisal Industry History Exhibition hopes to play a role as the educator of the early agricultural and industrial history of southern Taiwan. It provides displacement and briefing programs to increase the cultural propagation.


13. Lungluantan:Lake Lungluntan Every year from October to the next May, a large number of migratory birds migrate south from cold Siberia, the mainland and Japan would perch here for the winter and that makes the landscape of lakes and mountains of Lungluantan become a perfect site for bird-watching.


14. Hengchuen:「Old town 」 The over 100-year-old Hengchuen Town was established at Ching Dynasty. Although the four city gates were built in the remote past, they are conserved quite well and are rather intact compare with other ancient city gates in Taiwan.


15. Nanwan:South bay beach Nanwan is a small fishing village, and is also called “Blue Bay” because of its azure seawater. The beach stretches a length of about 600m with smooth curve. Its soft and clean sand beach makes it a famous spot for picnicking, swimming, and rowing or sailing a boat. This area has abundant aquatic products. The conventional using of beach seine by the local fishermen possess the potential of becoming a popular sightseeing spot.


16. Visitor Center: The KTNP was officially opened in 1984. It divided into two main parts of the Administration and the Visitor Center for services. The Administration runs and manages the businesses and practices of national park while the Visitor Center provides interpretation as well as tourism services.


17. Chingwashr:Frog rock Standing erect near the seashore, Chingwashr, a conglomerate rock as the small part of Dajianshan and Xiaojianshan in KTNP, It looks like a big frog that is going to jump into the sea. Around Chingwashr small pieces of solidified lavas are all over. You can also see the sea-caves, coral and seashell fossils here as well.


18. Kenting Youth Activity Center: Located beside Chingwashr, the 25 ha wide Kenting Youth Activity Center, which was constructed in February 1981 is one of the representative hostel of KTNP. It offers a chance for young people to have a firsthand experience of the conventional living environment of Taiwan, and also helps to educate them memory the root of the origin.


19. Dajianshan:「Big pointed mountain」 The Dajianshan is 318m above sea level. The shape of it would vary according to the location you stand: a big isolated stone when watching nearby and a magnificently straight up one when overlooking from Eluanbi. It is reputed as the Da-ba-jian-shan of Southern Taiwan and is also the most outstanding geological symbol of KTNP.


20. Kenting Ranch:「life stock ranch」 The Kenting Ranch was the location where the Han people settled down when they first came here. The main work of the ranch is the experimentation of feeder cattle and goat, disease research, and ranch breeding.


21. Kenting Forest Recreation Area: The Kenting Forest Recreation Area is a tropical botanical garden. It is also called the Kenting botanical garden or Kenting Park because of its densely wooded forest and its natural beauty. In 1968, in order to accelerate the academic study and increase its recreational convenience, the Taiwan Forestry Bureau renamed it as Kenting Forest Recreation Area, a scenic resort with spectacular southern scenery.


22. Sheding Nature Scenic, A reservation of local aborigine. Sheding Nature Park, with a total of 128.7 ha wide, is right beside the Kenting Forest Recreation Area. Trees inside the park that grow on reefs are naturally miniature-trees-and-rockery-shaped under the strong blow of northeasterly monsoon climate. One cannot but admire the extremely outstanding of the great nature.


23. Chuanfanshr :Sail rock With a height of 18m, Chuanfanshr is a hung coral reef rock that fell from an adjoining rising terraced ground. The rock formation is hard and solid than other coral reef rocks and therefore it is able to stand the marine abrasion. It is so named (the Chinese meaning a sail boat) because of its sailboat-shape. Some time ago a foreign visitor found the rock on its profiled looking similar to the former US president Richard Nixon’s head. and then now call its name Nixons head.


24. Shadau: Sea shell sand island Shadau located at the costal area southward to Eluanbi park. Among the three ecological conservation areas of KTNP that distinguish different features, Shadau is famous for its seashell beach conservation made of coral and scattered seashells.


25. Eluanbi Park: Eluanbi Park, a fiord located at the most southern part of Taiwan Island, is famous for its lighthouse. The Kuroshio Current causes the powerful ocean current of this area. Coral reef rocks stand in great number beneath the lighthouse. It is a park with dense forest and various species of wild lives could be seen here.


26. Eluanbi Lighthouse: In 1882, for the sake of cursing safety, the government employed a British technician to build a lighthouse at Eluanbi. The building-up process was under constant invasion by local aborigines; therefore, the lighthouse was armed with cannon and embrasure. Moreover, they trenched the edges of the lighthouse and a garrison was stationed in it. The Eluanbi Lighthouse is one of the armed lighthouses in the world.


27. The Southernmost Point: KTNP is located the most southern part of Taiwan Island, on Hengchuen peninsula. Have you visited the most southern part of Taiwan Island? Do you know where is the southernmost point of Taiwan ? The southernmost point is near the famous Eluanbi light house. To make a right turn from the road by Eluanbi Park and you can reach to the southernmost point(120°E; 21°N).by twenty minutes on foot walking.


28. Longkan:「Ecological Conservation Area」 Longkan is an area where coral reefs stretch in colony. Steep slope and overhanging cliff separated into two with mounted lifted coral reefs. The tableland coral limestone gradually falls apart and slides downward due to the constant lash of sea waves. It has 61 ha for total range. This area is an ecological conservation area and you need to apply for a permit if you wish to visit the place. 29. Lungpan:Grass land & Hanging cliff Lungpan is a huge area of grassland that stretches to the horizon. On its east side is the Pacific Ocean and you can even see Lan-yu(Orchid island)when it’s clear and cloudless. This area is made of coral reef cliff, and there are limestone caves underneath the red topsoil. It’s better to visit this place before dawn or at dusk because it’s the best time for you to enjoy the sunrise, the sunset, the afterglow and the starry night sky.


30. Fengchueisha :Wind blown sand About 5km away from Eluanbi, Fengchueisha serves as the pit spot between Eluanbi and Jialeshuei. The seashore area is coral reef rocky coast. The layer here is a mixtures of littoral sand that come from the battering of the wind and the rain over the years.


31. Gangkou:Small Harbor Gangkou is a small fishing village against mountain and facing the sea. It is famous for The giant hanging bridge and brook water run off to the ocean. The well known Gangkou oolong tea and where butterflies come and stay for winter. White bark figs spread about 800 square feet inside the Gangkou working station of Taiwan Forestry Research Institute in Hengchuen. It is not open to the public.


32. Jialeshuei: Mountain sea water fall On the east costal area of Hengchuen peninsula of Manjou, Jialeshuei is sometimes called the resident of Sea-god, or some called it the Ye-liu of southern Taiwan. The epeirogenic, wave erosion and nature weathering have turned the Jialishuei rocks into various shapes; for example, potholes, sea-waved platform, beehive-shaped rock, and spherulite.


33. Manjou:「A vivid country side」 Located at the northeast side of KTNP, Manjou is a sparsely populated mountain valley area lush with tropical plants. Every October, migratory birds, for example great amount of Gray-faced Buzzard Eagle, migrate south from Siberia and the mainland, would customarily gather here. Manjou is a perfect spot for appreciating the migration of these birds.


34. Lide:「Birds watching spot」 Lide- Manjou is located at the east side of Manjou Circle and is about 12 km away from Jialeshuei. It is the beloved perching site for migratory birds such as Gray-faced Buzzard Eagles thanks to its unfrequented condition and its lush tropical plants. It has attracted a large number of bird-watching enthusiasts every year. They come to enjoy it and do their research. Every year at the period of October, you can see tens of thousands of birds simply by lifting up your eyes.


35. Nanrenshan:「Ecological conservation area」 Nanrenshan is the place where thousands of various plants and wild animals live. species. Each October, the migration of a large number of Gray-faced Buzzard Eagles is a must-see sight that would take your breath away. The complete fauna and precious flora of Nanrenshan are not only of academic research value but also for environmental education and recreational interest. It is the essence of KTNP. 36. Chufor:Nature ground fire Chufor, located outside the east gate of Hengchuen, is so called because nature gas that comes from the fissure of underground mudstone is able to ignite fire that make the place looks like “fire coming out of ground” (so is the Chinese meaning). The landforms here are mudstone that has many fissures; therefore, the fire would move about. Anyway the present site of Chufor is not the original one, It was moved some place from another.
